Our eccentric conceptions of teacher professionalism
The government of New South Wales is not always helpful to teachers. Its plans to tie principals up in more red tape, should they need to exclude a student, are a strong example of an unhelpful idea. Nevertheless, it is hard to fault either the motivations behind, or the substance of, an initiative to provide teachers with centrally produced lesson plans that they may use or adapt.
However, a vocal group of teachers, encouraged by academics in The Conversation, are deeply affronted by the idea and the backlash tells us much about what is wrong with Australian education.
